Posted - 05/15/2012 : 3:39:50 PM This is my first season racing HS. I am running the Beginners Vet class. My Bike is a 2003 WR450 with a YZ450 1.8 gallon tank. I am wondering if I need to fuel stop?
The first 2 races were lots of mud I did not fuel. Idling or being stuck doesnt burn much. LOL.
OMA was 30 min shorted than normal. did not fuel.
HOT Water I fueled but not sure if I needed to. I haven't been able to get a good peg on the fuel usage yet.
Is 1.8 gallons enough for a Beginner or Very Slow C speed rider? |

Posted - 05/22/2012 : 09:17:44 AM I think you will be fine on the small tank. If you do fill up, one way to easily tell is put your fuel in a gallon milk jug before the race starts. Once you add that gallon during the race, you can get home and drain it to see how much you have left. 4 strokes are usually better on mileage if you have it jetted even half close. The reason i also say a gallon milk jug is because you can flip it over and squeeze it and it will come out much faster than a standard gas jug so you can get back to riding faster. I went from riding 250 2 stroke on 3.1 gallon tank filling up in 2 hr race to riding with 450 4 strk with 3.1 gallon tank and could almost make a 3 hour GNCC without filling up. And they are usually much faster than an AHSCS race.

Posted - 05/18/2012 : 07:24:46 AM My rule of thumb is if you know you ain't going to stop for gas and you have a reserve flip on reserve on the starting line. You don't want to be in a battle on the last lap and run out of fuel. By the time you get it over on reserve it is to late. But in this case I doubt Travis's YZ has a reserve. |

Posted - 05/17/2012 : 5:08:30 PM My 2008 wr450 has a 2.10 gallon tank, and as you know I haven't even been close to empty. But like thomkat said I coast down the hills. ;) |

Posted - 05/17/2012 : 4:06:38 PM I really doubt it would make it. I had an RMZ 450 that did not finish the time I tried several years back in the C class. I assume the fuel tanks on an RMZ and a yz would be similar. I also recently purchased a new WR450f. After 35 miles, I had allready hit reserve. Take your chances if you must but I'd definately advise at least emptying a small bottle of fuel somewhere during the race.

Posted - 05/16/2012 : 8:43:24 PM I will see how it goes. I think I will try the whole race and hope I don't run out. I think I will be good. All of the bikes I have had In the past have had very large tanks. I like the feel of this small tank . |

Posted - 05/16/2012 : 12:55:08 PM Yeah my lil YZ uses a lot more than my 450 ever did regardless of the displacement diff |

Posted - 05/16/2012 : 12:22:27 PM OP - long answer made short - you'll be fine on current tank for probably the rest of the season. It appears you only got a 4th lap once so far this year. 4 laps at Beg Vet class won't empty a tank. You can probably make 5 laps as well.
By the time you get to top of C class, you'll need a pit or a new tank. WR tanks on ebay are pretty easy to come by, prolly 50-70 bucks. |

Posted - 05/16/2012 : 10:49:13 AM The faster the terrain, the more fuel you will use. Like Jamey said...30 miles you will be fine..broken down 4 .. 7 mile loops, and you need to check it (when practicing) |

Posted - 05/16/2012 : 10:24:12 AM A 450 4 stroke will get better mileage that a 125 2 stoke I know I have rode both. The laps at Sturkie are portability going to be around 7 miles if you can get in more than 5 laps you want to pit, if not you should have no problem. |

Posted - 05/16/2012 : 12:00:54 AM 2T bikes burn more fuel than 4T's though. I would use Shelby's fuel usage for comparison over the 2T's of Kelly or Sean despite the displacement difference.
Did you happen to take note of how much fuel you filled up with after Hot Water? That would be the best indication (if you had a full fuel can also).
I would say at beginner level, you'd be alright with the 1.8 gal. However, if you have a reserve petcock, I would suggest taking advantage of that as an indicator of when you're about to run out. If you're worried about it, pit, splash a little in. Just make sure your tank and fuel can are completely full before the race so that after, you can fill them both up again and see exactly how much fuel you used. That way next time you know.
When I was in C Vet, running a stock tank on my KTM 450 I never ran out. When I ran my YZ125 with a stock tank in A Open, I didn't take a chance on it. I pitted, but I was A open and probably used a little more fuel than before. |

Posted - 05/15/2012 : 10:57:41 PM I managed to get in 5 laps at Hot Water on 1 tank on my bike. I checked afterwards and looked like I maybe had 1/5th of tank left. I've kinda had the same question as you and figured I'd just learn from experience. I really dont know how much fuel I use. Guess it varies from race to race. |

Posted - 05/15/2012 : 4:09:59 PM i think you will be fine on a full tank of fuel for a 30 miles if its jetted close. |
