I agree the AP is a great tool, and is needed, and does help in advancement, But I feel it alone should not set the standard for advancement. The AP is not a 100% fool proof system. Sounds a lot like mine. Did a valve adjustment, It did crank but ran like the main jet was plugged up. After chasing and replacing EVERYTHING, it was a bad stator.
