Tech Help!

My Honda has let me down people. I know its unheard of, but you know **it does happen.
Anywho,
Its a 09 450 with the EFI and I am not getting any spark to the plug. Put a brand new plug in and checked all wires and connectors including the kill switch and still no luck. The manual says it could be a number of things so BC of the EFI who knows where to start??

Anybody got any ideas or suggestions to help me out please send them this way!

I know nothing about the EFI, but:
1) Don't the EFI's give a error code via blinking light somewhere?
2) Have you ohm'd out the kill switch or just checked the wires?
3) Can you unplug it to "reset" it?

just throwing out some useless ideas.

i won't say how you should buy a KTM 2-stroke 300 and never worry again.

I picked up an official Honda service manual today that list all the specified readings for those electrical components, along with a voltmeter and plan to check all that out over the weekend.

Just wandered if there were any field test tricks out there to get me started.

I haven't tried the KTM 300 trick and never plan to on any occasion.

How did this problem start? Did it just not start one day or did it quit running?

The manual will give too much info. that may just confuse thing. I would bet the coils and stuff are OK it just not getting a signal to fire.

I would start by pulling the stator cover and making sure the Primary pick-up coil is clean and not covered with metal deposits.

Unplug the kill button

Unplug every thing, Carb clean, brush then WD and plug in.

I had just done a valve adjustment on it and prior to that it would run perfectly but just stubborn to start bc a couple intake valves were tight. put it back together, kicked, kicked, kicked and kicked and got nothing no even a cough. put a new plug in still no fire.

I will go back and thoroughly re check all connectors, wires, and ground connections and then foolow your advice.

I have not hit the bike with a pressure washer all year so no worries there.

Hey Preston! try not to worry with the EFI.

No spark, start from plug(did that).

1. unplug your kill switch

2.check coil, coil wire plug (sometimes the wire will pull out of the plug).

3. regulator/rectifier first

4. stator /generator

5. CDI/ECM

The EFi won't have anything to do with lack of spark. If anything on EFI goes bad, the bike will still run, it will just run crappy or be hard to start.

If your stator is bad, then your fuel pump won't work...since that is what generates power for the pump to run. If the fuel pump is going out, it could stress the stator enough to get no spark, but not likely.

My money is on the Kill switch or coil issue.

I'm leaning way on the spark plug wire and cap side. I'm pretty sure you have a screw on cap on your bike. Un screw it cut 1/4 inch of the spark plug wire off and screw the cap back on with a little di-electric grease on the end of the wire. Make sure the wire is still firmly attached to the coil. If that does not help might want to replace the cap. I see more modern bikes having spark plug cap failures than the old day from hotter ignitions running the resitant caps. Both of the are cheap checks. With a high percentage fix for your machine.

Thanks everybody for the input. It really helps me out a lot and gives me a place to start and a knowledge of what to look for. Gonna go into it pretty heavy this weekend and hope to come up with something. ill keep ya posted

Sounds a lot like mine. Did a valve adjustment, It did crank but ran like the main jet was plugged up. After chasing and replacing EVERYTHING, it was a bad stator.

Checking the cap and first bit of wire is a good bet sense it was just taken apart.

It is a good annual serve on 2 strokes and 4 strokes to remove the stator to make sure they are well grounded to the cases. Just a little corrosion will cause the stator to over heat.

The pick up coil generates a magnetic field. Any metal deposits will stick to it and break down that field strength causing a weak or lose of spark.

Thanks everyone for the advice and suggestions.
After much pacing around the garage and scratching my head, I came to conclude that I simply had a bad connection somewhere in the electrical system. I unplugged the fuel pump and sprayed some WD in the connections as Rod had mentioned and blew it out with compressed air. Cranked it over a few times and developed a spark. I proceeded to take all other connections and clean them out with some more WD and applied some Di-electric grease to all the connectors as someone else mentioned. Plugged everything back up with the plug still out and still developed a spark. After all that and a valve adjustment it fired up easier than it ever has since I've owned it. I think I squealed like a little school girl after that, I'm not sure.

It ran perfectly all weekend with no more issues. Again thanks to everyone for your help.
