Godfrey Takes a Short A Win at Japton

Christian Godfrey from Cabot, Arkansas took a much needed win in the Short A class at the Japton’s on Fire Hare Scramble on June 22nd.  Godfrey has been splitting time this year between soccer and racing and this win inched him up the points ladder a little bit.  The Short A class is one of the favorites among race families.  It’s the stepping off class from racing the short course to moving up to the School Boy category where racers will compete on the long course.

Luke Smith took the hole shot at the race start but somewhere in the 1st lap Smith must have taken a spill.  Godfrey got around a Smith and never looked back.  The race finish order was set on the first lap.  Cassie Dupriest, Evan Webb, and Smith all chasing Godfrey.  Smith may have faired better but this was his first race back after a injured finger from earlier this spring.  Dupriest with her second place finish now has a solid lead in the overall points battle.  Absent this race was Braxton Burns.  Burns has shown the speed and Dupriest only has a 9 point lead over Burns.  For the second half of the season this will be a points chase to watch.  With Godfrey missing a couple of races for soccer games you can only wonder how the points board might appear.  Evan Webb has talent and is continuing to make progress.  If it weren’t for a bike break-down once or twice his results would be different.  This is one of deepest classes in the series.  Brett Vollmer, Caleb Echols, and Garrett Schwindt have all shown they are serious about racing and making five of the first seven races.

The good news is the future of the AHSCS series has some outstanding racers who are growing up and making for some great competition among friends.
